The History of Columbiana

The Embodiment of Small-Town America

The history of Columbiana, Ohio begins in the early 19th century, when the area was first settled by pioneers moving westward into the newly formed state of Ohio. Joshua Dixon arrived around 1802, and in 1805 he and William Heald formally laid out the town.

The community grew steadily as a small rural village. By the 1830s it had developed basic commerce and transportation connections, and it was officially incorporated as a village in 1837. Over time, Columbiana expanded its local services—such as utilities and public safety—reflecting its gradual transformation from a frontier settlement into a structured town.

In the late 19th century, Columbiana gained wider recognition as the birthplace of industrialist Harvey S. Firestone, founder of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. His success brought lasting influence to the city; in the 1930s, he donated land for what became Firestone Park, a major local landmark.

Columbiana also has ties to broader historical movements. For example, a mid-19th-century home in the city is believed to have been part of the Underground Railroad, reflecting the region’s role in pre–Civil War efforts to aid escaping enslaved people.

In modern times, Columbiana continued to grow and was officially designated a city in 2000. Today, it is known for preserving its small-town character while celebrating local traditions, festivals, and its historical roots.
